Humidifying the Laboratory at Robert Koch-Institut, Berlin, Germany

Shortly after moving into the new building, there were complaints about the indoor climate. Employees complained of dry airways, irritated eyes, coughing and headaches. Measurements of the relative humidity showed values of only 10 to 20 percent.

No germs

After extensive research, the RKI decided to ensure a health-protecting minimum humidity of 40 percent for the employees with direct room air humidification. Since 2018, more than 90 DRAABE NanoFog nozzle humidifiers have been in use at the RKI. In addition to the lower conversion costs, the decisive factor for this direct room air humidification was above all the hygiene proof of the completely germ-free humidification: With the "Optimized Air Humidification" certificate from the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) and the additional certification according to VDI 6022 Part 6, cross-contamination by air humidification can be safely ruled out.

Satisfied employees

The water used for air humidification is completely demineralized and sterilized in the DRAABE NanoFog system using a system's own multi-stage water treatment system. The necessary maintenance and disinfection of the system is carried out automatically by replacing small mobile containers every six months. Due to the intensive communication and coordination between technology, staff representatives and scientists, the air humidification system has been approved by the employees of the Robert Koch Institute at the beginning. The goal of increasing the well-being of employees and protecting them from health hazards caused by the indoor climate has been achieved with the retrofitting of air humidification: there are complaints about air that is too dry there are no more on the part of the employees.

In a 2-year study, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO investigated the significance and effect of humidity in the office. The results show that humidity has a positive effect on the assessment of the workplace and can also have an effect on the health and performance of office workers.
