Schwerin Palace heritage protected by precise steam humidity

Schwerin Palace stands majestically on an island in the centre of Schwerin and is widely recognised as the city’s most iconic landmark. It is the largest and most lavish of the more than 2,000 castles and manor houses found throughout Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, showcasing the region’s rich aristocratic heritage. Surrounded by picturesque lakes and peaceful landscapes, the palace once served as the residence of the Mecklenburg dukes, symbolising centuries of regional power and cultural influence. Since 1990, it has also housed the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament, blending historical grandeur with modern political significance. To preserve historic interiors and ensure a stable indoor environment, Condair steam humidifiers provide precise and hygienic humidification, supporting year-round comfort and humidity stability within this heritage building.

Architectural splendor and climate-controlled preservation

The palace’s present-day appearance is the result of extensive reconstruction and new building efforts carried out between 1845 and 1857, transforming it into one of Germany’s most impressive examples of historicist architecture. The grounds surrounding the palace feature a remarkable variety of gardens, many of which were redesigned or newly created for the 2009 “Bundesgartenschau” horticultural exhibition. These carefully curated outdoor spaces complement the castle’s ornate silhouettes and enhance the overall visitor experience. Inside, Condair EL steam humidifiers maintain optimal atmospheric humidity, ensuring a comfortable indoor climate while helping protect delicate interior furnishings, artworks and historic materials for future generations.

The Condair EL series is the latest generation of well-known steam humidifiers from Condair. These products are the first choice whenever simple but reliable steam/air humidification is required. Users of such installations look for simple and easy operation, and demand healthy, hygienically humidified breathing air. The Condair EL series steam humidifier meets these demands in an exemplary manner.

Projects and references

ADAC Center, Munich

In March 2012, ADAC™s new headquarters officially opened for business after six years of construction. Since December 2011, the office has been home to some 2,400 employees in over 100 professions, who were previously spread out across seven different locations. Bringing them all together in one place will encourage innovative ways of working, improve the speed of business processes, and simplify member services.

Royal Albert Hall

The Royal Albert Hall is probably the best-known concert building in Great Britain. Aronud two million guests a year enjoy acoustic cultural delights ranging from rock to classical music. Condair steam humidifiers ensure a perfect humidity in the organ chamber so that wooden parts maintain their integrity and shape, and move over each other perfectly, as they were designed to do.

The Chedi Hotel

After its opening in late 2013, The Chedi in Switzerland was named as a 2014 must go to destination by the international press. Together with other projects, it aims to make the small town of Andermatt more attractive than St. Moritz. On top of that, the Chedi exemplifies sustainability in a luxurious way. The hotel's sustainable and luxurious design is reflected in the architecture, building materials as well as its modern utilities.12 Condair hybrid humidifiers are installed to meet the building's air humidity requirements.

Actelion Business Center

Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg - Germany

In January 2017, the Elbphilharmonie (or Elbe Philharmonic Hall) was officially opened after about ten years of construction work. Its unique glass facade, which plays on visual associations with sails and ocean waves, has already established itself as a new landmark of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Inside the Elbphilharmonie™s main concert hall, specially-designed and individually-carved wall and ceiling elements provide incredibly precise sound diffusion and perfect acoustics.

The main hall has 2,100 seats in total, and each seat is individually supplied with fresh air. Condair DL hybrid humidifiers ensure comfort for visitors and optimal acoustic conditions for the orchestra.

Archives

Proper humidity control in archives ensures stable storage conditions by maintaining the right balance of moisture in the air. This prevents mould, pests, corrosion, and brittleness, while also improving energy efficiency compared to heating-only methods. The result is reliable, long-term preservation of both organic and inorganic collections.

Military storage

No country has all its military equipment in constant state of readiness. A percentage is “mothballed” and is not short term fully battle ready. This can be in all branches of the military; Army, Navy and Air force. Each can have some unique challenges. For example, keeping a store of ammunition dry compared to keeping a warship dry require very different approaches. Whilst the basic requirement is the same, the target is maintenance of the correct humidity to prevent damage. Commonly prevention of high humidity and corrosion was seen as the key target. However insufficient humidity or overly dry conditions can equally cause damage and failures to certain materials and electronic components. Storage conditions with excessive levels of absolute or relative humidity can encourage insect pest activity and the growth of mould on uniforms. Whilst metal corrosion such as rusting of steel components is still a critical aspect, equipment such as computers, telecommunications systems, lithium batteries are more prone to microscopic damage to circuitry either by corrosion or by electrostatic discharge. Today’s military hardware is no longer simple metal items. Different metals, the use of composites materials, sealants, surface coatings, types of munitions together with very high technology electronic warfare systems, means that a much more precise level of humidity control is required to prevent damage in storage.
