Humidity Control for Vitra’s Iconic Design House, Weil am Rhein - Germany

The VitraHaus in Weil am Rhein, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, showcases Vitra’s designer furniture across 3,600 m² of exhibition space. Its distinctive stacked-house architecture is complemented by Condair steam humidifiers, which ensure clean and consistent indoor humidity.

VitraHaus, Weil am Rehin

The designer furniture manufacturer Vitra presents its latest and most innovative furniture collections inside the spectacular VitraHaus—an architectural and design landmark in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The 21-meter-high structure features a complex and visually striking composition: multiple elongated, house-shaped volumes are stacked atop one another in a seemingly “chaotic” arrangement. This dramatic concept, created by renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, was inspired by the playful and unpredictable positioning of Mikado sticks.

Spread across four floors and 3,600 square meters, the VitraHaus invites visitors to explore both classic and contemporary designer pieces in a setting that feels immersive and inspiring. Serving as a hybrid between an exhibition space and a museum, it offers visitors countless ideas for their own interiors while celebrating Vitra’s commitment to design excellence. To maintain a pleasant and hygienic indoor climate, Condair steam humidifiers ensure a constant and reliable supply of clean humidity throughout the building.

The EL series is the latest generation of well-known steam humidifiers from Condair. These products are the first choice whenever simple but reliable steam/air humidification is required.

Users of such installations look for simple and easy operation, and demand healthy, hygienically humidified breathing air. The Condair EL series steam humidifier meets these demands in an exemplary manner.

Projects and references

Amy Storm Residence, Chicago

Interior designer Amy¯Storm undertook a year‘long design/build of her own Chicago‘area home, œShelter for the Storms, and chose Condair™s MN flexible humidification system to tackle the dry winter climate. Presented with the challenge of low indoor humidity that causes discomfort and can damage wood furnishings and artwork, she required a system that could integrate with radiant heating and forced‘air cooling while preserving her design vision. The Condair¯MN system uses a mesh‘nebulizer humidification method without traditional ductwork, providing precise control of indoor humidity in the ideal 40‘60% RH range. The result: a home transformed into a sanctuary of comfort and wellness, where art and books are protected, residents feel better, and trust in the ongoing support was affirmed. The installation was tightly coordinated over a nine‘month construction phase, and the system™s performance and seamless integration exceeded expectations.

Columbus Museum of Modern Art, USA

The Columbus Museum of Art needed precise humidity control to protect priceless artworks and ensure visitor comfort. Condair installed its RS steam humidifiers, integrated with the museum™s HVAC system, delivering consistent humidity in the ideal 50¯Â±¯5¯% RH range. The system™s design allows rapid response to seasonal and daily fluctuations, ensuring paintings, sculptures, and historic artifacts are safeguarded against cracking, warping, or other moisture-related damage. Easy to operate and maintain, the RS units provide reliable, energy-efficient performance while blending unobtrusively into the museum™s infrastructure. By maintaining stable indoor humidity, Condair helps preserve the integrity of the collection, supports optimal conditions for visitors, and provides curators with confidence that their environment meets stringent conservation standards.
