"Fogra – researches, tests, certifies”: under this motto, around 50 employees develop application-oriented solutions for quality assurance. “We are the TÜV of the printing industry worldwide and provide answers to the question of how print results can be consistent for different machines, materials, and processes,” says Managing Director and Institute Director Dr. Eduard Neufeld, summarizing Fogra's tasks. The new building in Aschheim near Munich is individually tailored to the needs of the internationally active research institute: at 4,100 square meters, the usable space has almost doubled compared to the building previously used as a tenant. The property was made possible by three million euros in funding from the Free State of Bavaria. For Rainer Pietzsch, head of public relations, the new size of the institute has a positive double benefit: "The Verband Druck und Medien Bayern e.V. (Bavarian Printing and Media Association) has also moved in as a tenant. This allows us to work more closely together and share many rooms.
Everything in your wallet
In addition to the traditional printing industry, Fogra has added a new focus in recent years: the testing of identity cards, such as ID cards, driver's licenses, and bank cards. “We test everything in your wallet – except coins! We are the global market leader in this growing market segment,” emphasizes Dr. Neufeld. Identity cards are tested for their resistance to counterfeiting and for their resistance to external influences such as UV radiation, mechanical, chemical, or climatic stresses. In all tests carried out at the Fogra Research Institute, the standard climate plays an important role in the reproducibility of the results. "Since Fogra was founded, humidity has always been an issue in quality assurance and consulting. We published our first publications and recommendations on this topic back in 1956," reports Rainer Pietzsch. While controlled humidity in the printing room is standard practice, a standard climate is particularly important for the reliable testing of identity cards and banknotes.
"The air humidification system ensures homogeneous humidification and reliable compliance with the required standard climate in all rooms thanks to the individual units."
