Optimal climate and sound at Thomann Music House in Germany
Thomann stands for music in all its facets and an impressive success story: Since its founding in 1954 as a small music shop, the family business has grown into the world's largest e-commerce company for instruments and music equipment. Around 1,500 of the more than 1,800 employees work at the Thomann Campus, the company headquarters in Treppendorf near Bamberg, Bavaria. In addition to administration and customer service, including a call center and specialized master workshops, Europe's largest music store is also located here, forming the heart of the campus. Every year, around 90,000 music fans make the pilgrimage to Treppendorf, a village of just 200 inhabitants, to discover, try out, and be inspired. With the expansion from 6,400 to over 12,000 square meters of retail space, Thomann will operate the world's largest single music store starting in 2026. As with the many previous expansions on the campus, additional direct air humidification is planned for the new themed areas.

Humidity as a multitalented factor
"Our instruments need it," says Florian Rittweger, Sales Manager at Thomann, succinctly summing it up. Wooden instruments like guitars and violins are particularly sensitive to excessively dry air. Without regulated humidity, they risk cracking, warping, or loss of sound. Wind instruments also benefit indirectly, as their wooden components, such as reeds, are also sensitive to moisture. The optimal relative humidity is between 40–50% for stringed instruments and 35–40% for wind instruments. Besides protecting the instruments, presentation in the sales area also plays a crucial role. "Sufficient humidity binds dust, and the resulting clean surfaces enhance the appeal of the display," explains Florian Rittweger. "Humidification helps ensure that the sales area remains visually attractive. Customers experience a pleasant, fresh atmosphere that invites them to linger—a factor not to be underestimated in brick-and-mortar retail." But controlled humidity isn't just important for the sales floors: "Above all, we want to create attractive, comfortable workplaces and protect the health of our employees," explains Alexander Schell, Head of Construction Projects, regarding the continuous expansion of humidification systems in Thomann's administration, call center, and customer service areas over the past few years.

Voice and respiratory system protected
For the new administration building, which opened in 2022, humidification was planned from the outset based on positive experiences in the sales areas and call center. The four-story building includes open-plan offices for more than 300 customer service employees, as well as numerous meeting rooms. The interior design is clearly geared towards providing the highest possible workplace quality for employees: green and light-filled atriums, ergonomic sit-stand workstations, sound-absorbing flooring, and acoustic partitions create a pleasant working environment. Direct room humidification complements this concept: "We have received very positive feedback from our call center employees for many years. Therefore, it was essential for us to ensure an optimal relative humidity of at least 40 percent year-round in the new building as well," explains Alexander Schell. Especially in workplaces with extensive screen work, excessively dry air can lead to problems: voice problems, hoarseness, eye irritation, and a weakened immune response in the respiratory tract are common consequences of insufficient humidity.

Hygienic humidification
For humidification, Thomann uses a Condair Direct room humidification system. This solution employs small, high-pressure nozzles that transform water into a micro-fine mist at up to 70 bar. This barely visible mist is immediately and completely absorbed by the room air, ensuring a consistent increase in humidity. The system is controlled by hygrometers that continuously measure the humidity in the room. As soon as the set target value is undershot, humidification activates automatically until the optimal humidity level is reached again. This can be done room by room or individually for specific zones, allowing for customized humidity levels in different retail spaces, offices, or meeting rooms, for example. For Florian Rittweger, this is a crucial advantage in sales: “Different instruments require different humidity levels. Direct room humidification allows us to control this very flexibly.” Before nebulization, the water is completely demineralized and disinfected. This takes place in a pre-treatment system that is part of the Condair humidification system. The integrated, multi-stage water treatment system is housed in portable containers, which are exchanged every six months by the manufacturer for fully serviced and cleaned systems. “As users, this means we don’t have to worry about maintenance ourselves and can be confident that hygiene and operational reliability are always guaranteed. That’s particularly important to us,” emphasizes Alexander Schell. In addition, the humidification system is certified by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) and is regularly tested and recertified on-site by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) according to VDI 6022, Part 6. These integrated, multi-stage water treatment systems are housed in portable containers that are exchanged every six months for fully serviced and cleaned systems as part of the manufacturer’s standard service.

Always growing with the times
For Alexander Schell, the decision to use direct room humidification has proven its worth over many years: “Thanks to its modular design, we have been able to continuously expand the humidification system and adapt it to our needs over the past 15 years. Added to this are the comprehensive services, fast response times, and excellent customer support.” At Thomann, controlled humidification is far more than just a technical measure for improving the climate – it's an integral part of their customer and employee focus. It protects the musical instruments, creates an attractive sales atmosphere, and promotes employee well-being. “From 2026 onwards, humidification will once again play a key role in what will then be the world's largest single music store,” says Alexander Schell with satisfaction. The additional humidification system is firmly planned for the new sales area, which will expand to over 12,000 square meters, and is one of the reasons why Thomann is not just a retailer of musical instruments, but a unique experience for musicians and employees alike.

"Thanks to modularity, we have been able to steadily expand air humidification over the past 15 years and adapt it to our needs. In addition, there are the comprehensive services, fast response times and the very good advice."
