Humidity as a quality factor - WERNER KENKEL Sp. z o.o., Krzycko Wielkie (Poland)

The Werner Kenkel Group is the largest family-run manufacturer of corrugated cardboard and packaging in Poland. With three production facilities and over 1,600 employees, the company manufactures products for customers in Poland and abroad. Its most important segments include the food trade and manufacturers of household products. The flexographic printing production facility in Krzycko Wielkie, southwest of Poznań, has a total area of almost 40,000 m2. The plant offers corrugated board in a wide range of different assortments and prints packaging from flexo preprint to high-quality flexo postprint.

No production disruptions

From the corrugated cardboard warehouse to die cutting, folding, and gluing, an optimal relative humidity of 55% guarantees consistently high quality without production disruptions. “The flatness of the corrugated board is a must for us in production. Material distortion, shrinkage, or tears due to excessively dry air lead to problems that we, as a quality supplier, must avoid at all costs,” explains Piotr Wojciechowski, Technical Director at Werner Kenkel. In all phases of processing, optimum flatness and dimensional stability of the material are important prerequisites for trouble-free machine throughput. For Piotr Wojciechowski, the requirements for the indoor climate have increased significantly in recent years: “Today, we mainly use fully automatic machines of the latest generation with very high speeds. Even slight deviations from flatness then lead to production interruptions and waste.”

High-pressure air humidification

Werner Kenkel uses the Condair ML system to ensure controlled humidity. This system is particularly suitable for tall and large production halls and was first put into operation in 2015. Since the expansion in 2022, a total of 24 ML Princess high-pressure nozzle humidifiers have been in use. With up to 70 bar, each ML Princess atomizes a maximum of 36 liters of water per hour without expensive compressed air, steam, or ultrasound. All water-carrying parts of the system are made of stainless steel, guaranteeing long durability. The system includes integrated water treatment that filters the required water and provides it safely without germs, bacteria, or minerals. The Werner Kenkel factory does not have to worry about maintaining the water treatment system itself. The manufacturer regularly carries out all necessary cleaning and testing to ensure that the system functions without disruption. The Condair ML system has been awarded the “Optimized Air Humidification” test mark by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).

Greater cost-effectiveness

Piotr Wojciechowski is certain of the advantages of additional air humidification: “Our experience shows that optimal air humidity allows us to produce faster and with less waste. This reduces costs and makes our processes more efficient.” The performance and service of the Condair ML air humidification system guarantee Werner Kenkel cost-effective operation all year round. “Controlled humidity is essential for us and has a direct impact on our production and quality. Even the best machines and materials only deliver perfect results when the environmental conditions are optimal,” Piotr Wojciechowski is convinced.

"Our experience shows that we can produce faster and with less waste due to the optimal humidity. This reduces costs and makes our processes more efficient."
