One air humidification for three problems
Bart Sp. z o.o., based in Świecie, is one of the leading manufacturers of corrugated board and packaging in Poland. With approximately 260 employees, the company produces, prints, and processes over 1.4 billion square meters of corrugated board annually. Its customers include food retailers, fruit and vegetable producers, and companies in the automotive, electronics, and chemical industries. "Our strength lies in our flexibility. We have the right solution for every requirement and can satisfy all needs with state-of-the-art machinery," explains Bartosz Dziepak, Managing Director of the Zakupow plant. Bart's success story began over 25 years ago: in 1992, Zbigniew Dziepak and Bogusław Mierzwiak founded the company and started manufacturing corrugated board. Today, Bart is the largest owner-managed packaging company in Poland. For Bartosz Dziepak, the high quality standards combined with cutting-edge technology are the key to success: "The highest quality at the best price is our commitment to our products and our promise to our customers."

Bart's success story began over 25 years ago. Quality is a must
Back in 2012, Bart established its own laboratory to monitor its quality standards. The entire production chain, from raw materials to the finished product ready for shipment, is inspected: “Our production is certified according to the global BRC standard for food safety. This allows us to guarantee our customers a documented quality management system and absolute control over hygiene and production conditions,” confirms Bartosz Dziepak. With the introduction of quality management, the indoor climate was also included in the regular inspections. Analysis revealed particularly strong fluctuations in humidity and temperature, especially during the winter months.

Problems caused by dry air
When relative humidity drops below 40%, paper and cardboard lose their equilibrium moisture content and release moisture into the surrounding air. As a result, the corners and edges of the material curl upwards (“curling”), and the paper can crack or shrink. These deviations from flatness can lead to significant problems in printing and further processing, and, for example, compromise the accuracy of die-cutting and gluing packaging. When processing films and thin papers, electrostatic discharge can further impede production. After analyzing the indoor climate, Bart decided to optimize humidity levels as a key component of their quality management system. "To learn about suitable humidification systems, we visited the drupa trade fair and various offset printing companies in Germany in 2016. We encountered the humidification systems from Condair Systems everywhere and were impressed," recalls Bartosz Dziepak.

Cooling and dust control
The packaging specialist opted for the ML system from Condair Systems. This system is particularly well-suited for high-ceilinged and large production halls. A total of 23 ML Princess high-pressure nozzle humidifiers are installed, suspended from the ceiling in the various production areas. Operating at up to 70 bar, each ML Princess atomizes a maximum of 36 liters of water per hour into an ultra-fine mist without the need for expensive compressed air, steam, or ultrasound. Direct high-pressure humidification provides Bart with two additional advantages in production: The immediate evaporation of the water in the air creates a cooling effect. The temperature in the production areas can be reduced by 2°C to 5°C without the need for additional air conditioning. Furthermore, the air is purified of dust. A thin film of water envelops the dust particles, causing them to settle more quickly and preventing them from being resuspended.

Optimal results
All water-carrying components of the ML system are made of stainless steel, guaranteeing long-lasting durability and absolute hygiene. The system includes an integrated water treatment unit that filters the required water and provides it safely, free of germs, bacteria, and minerals. Bart doesn't have to worry about the regular maintenance of the water treatment unit. Once a year, Condair Systems, together with a Polish partner company, performs all necessary cleaning and testing, ensuring the system always operates hygienically and safely. This service and the results of the ML humidification system convinced Bart that he had made the right decision: “With our humidification system, we now achieve optimal humidity levels between 45 and 45 percent all year round, have a much better indoor climate, and fewer machine stoppages and problems in downstream processing. The controlled humidity brings us noticeably higher efficiency and process stability in production,” Bartosz Dziepak summarizes his positive experience with the ML system.

"Thanks to air humidification, we no longer have problems with electrostatics, which in the past often led to production interruptions."
