Optimal humidity at call center Thomann GmbH
With over 10 million customers in 120 countries and 80,000 products in its range, Thomann GmbH is one of the world's highest-grossing mail-order companies for musical instruments, lighting, and sound equipment. What began in 1954 with company founder Hans Thomann Senior as a music shop in the living quarters of the family farmhouse is today a champion in the dynamically growing e-commerce sector. Deeply rooted in the Steigerwald region of Upper Franconia and run as an independent family business, 1,400 employees are responsible for Thomann's success. For Managing Director Hans Thomann Junior, despite all the changes, one of his father's maxims remains the most important foundation of the company: "Our customers determine our actions – we must listen to them and learn from them." A significant contribution to this success-determining foundation is made by the customer dialogue of the company's own call center with its 250 employees: Thomann Customer Service handles all requests related to orders, technical questions, and service in 19 languages via telephone, email, or chat.

Dry air in the call center
Increasing internationalization and rapid growth in online business necessitated a significant expansion of call center workstations. Customer service now operates in a 1,000-square-meter open-plan office. High transparency and fast, direct communication characterize the customer service teams, which are organized by country. "Especially during the winter months, however, employees frequently complained of irritated eyes, vocal strain, and dry mucous membranes," recalls Thomann Sales Manager Eddie Isaakjan. Measurements taken by the building's technical staff revealed that the relative humidity was sometimes below 30 percent. Together with the team leaders, the technical staff then sought solutions to better adapt the indoor climate to the needs and requirements of the employees. Eddie Isaakjan became aware of the possibility of direct room humidification through the Thomann guitar showroom, which was retrofitted with high-pressure jet humidifiers to protect the instruments: “We heard very positive feedback from our colleagues and were convinced that a similar solution would noticeably improve the indoor climate in our customer service area.”

Reliable humidification
Since 2017, the Thomann call center, along with its associated back office and accounting department, has been equipped with direct room humidification. The system uses the Draabe Nanofog humidification system from Condair Systems. This system consists of 46 small jet humidifiers installed directly in the open-plan offices, which emit a fine mist as needed. Humidity is regulated by digital room sensors, ensuring a constant relative humidity of 40 percent year-round. For Alexander Schell of Thomann's construction department, guaranteed hygiene and ease of maintenance were the deciding factors in choosing the humidification system: "I was particularly impressed by the integrated water treatment of the Draabe system, which guarantees that only purified and germ-free water is used. Furthermore, we as users don't have to worry about maintenance." The multi-stage water treatment system is housed in portable containers, which are exchanged every six months by the manufacturer for fully serviced and cleaned systems as part of their regular maintenance service. Operational safety and hygienic performance are certified by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) and the Association of German Engineers (VDI) and are regularly recertified on-site for installed systems. The system's integrated water treatment is housed in portable containers, which are exchanged every six months as part of the manufacturer's standard service for fully serviced and cleaned units.

Healthy and valued
Shortly after the humidification system was put into operation, a significant improvement in the perceived indoor climate was evident: "We received immediate positive feedback. Most colleagues now find the air noticeably fresher, windows are opened less often, and complaints about eye and voice strain have disappeared," summarizes Eddie Isaakjan. Looking back, it's not surprising that the vocal apparatus is particularly sensitive to dry air in such speech-intensive workplaces as call centers, Isaakjan notes: "The mucous membranes in the throat and pharynx need moisture for the voice to function properly and remain strong for extended periods. Drinking water alone isn't enough." "The motivating effect of the improved indoor climate shouldn't be underestimated either," adds Eric Fontana, Sales Manager who leads the international call center team: "Our colleagues sense that their employer is actively doing something for their well-being and health, and this is perceived as very appreciative. We are pleased to have an effective solution for improving our indoor climate in the form of direct room humidification."

"There was immediate positive feedback. For most colleagues, the air now feels noticeably fresher, windows are opened less and the complaints about eye and voice strain are gone."
