Employee health comes first at se-austria GmbH & Co.

se-austria is part of the seele Group, which designs, plans, and implements innovative glass and facade constructions worldwide. At its location in Schörfling near Salzburg, a team of 130 specialists implements complex building envelopes made of glass, steel, aluminum, wood, and high-tech materials. With structures produced at its headquarters in Gersthofen, Bavaria, se-austria implements high-end projects in the United Kingdom, the Gulf region, and Southeast Asia. One of its outstanding references is the implementation of the sophisticated design, logistics, and assembly concept for the steel and glass structure of the Chadstone Shopping Center in Melbourne: The curved free-form roof of Australia's largest shopping center has a total area of 7,000 m² and consists of over 2,600 insulating glass panes and 2,800 steel nodes, which were finally assembled in a record time of less than 150 days. “Our projects always depend on intensive teamwork, a high level of commitment, and professional expertise. That's why we place a very high value on employee orientation and optimal workplace design,” explains Andrea Bell, responsible for facility management at se-austria.

Too dry in winter

Since 2004, the company has been based in Schörfling am Attersee in Upper Austria. The new building, initially designed for 80 employees, was expanded in 2008 to accommodate the growing number of workplaces. “Since then, there have been repeated complaints about the indoor climate because the ventilation system is not optimally designed for the higher number of employees,” recalls Andrea Bell. Especially in winter, it was often not possible to achieve the required relative humidity. In addition, employees in some parts of the building complained about excessive temperatures and poor air quality. When the German headquarters in Gersthofen retrofitted direct room humidification in the office areas in 2020 as part of a coronavirus hygiene concept, Andrea Bell was able to share in the positive experiences: “There was a lot of positive feedback from both facility management and the team in Germany. Improving the air quality for our employees in a noticeable way while reducing the risk of respiratory infections were decisive reasons for us to also install additional air humidification.”

Maintenance-friendly technology

A humidification system from Condair Systems has been in operation at se-austria since the end of 2020. The direct room humidification system consists of 30 Draabe NanoFog nozzle humidifiers, which are installed separately from the ventilation and air conditioning system in the office areas. The nebulizers are controlled by digital hygrometers, which activate the air humidification when the relative humidity falls below the target value of 45 percent. The micro-fine spray mist is immediately absorbed by the room air and increases the humidity to the desired level. The humidifiers are fed via thin high-pressure hoses that carry the water at a pressure of up to 85 bar from a centrally installed water treatment system. To ensure that only germ- and mineral-free mist is released into the air at all times, the water passes through the system's own water treatment system: Pure water for air humidification is continuously produced via multi-stage filtration, a reverse osmosis system, and UV-C irradiation. For easy maintenance, the water treatment system is installed in small mobile containers, which are automatically replaced by the manufacturer every six months. For Andrea Bell, this maintenance-friendly concept is a major advantage: “Unlike our old air humidification system, which was integrated into the air conditioning system, this system is much easier for us to maintain and service. The containers can be replaced in just a few simple steps, eliminating the need for time-consuming repairs and maintenance on site.”

Healthy and fresh

After more than two years of operation, Andrea Bell's experience with the retrofitted air humidification system has been consistently positive: “Our employees immediately welcomed the additional humidity. Many were happy that there were no more complaints about dry eyes or irritated mucous membranes.” A positive side effect is the additional cooling effect of direct room air humidification: the indoor climate in the offices and meeting rooms is perceived as fresher overall. The complete absorption of the micro-fine atomized water droplets removes excess heat from the room air and has a pleasant effect on well-being. “This has given us a twofold advantage for our employees: their health is protected and their satisfaction in the workplace is increased. This fits in perfectly with se-austria's strong employee focus,” says Andrea Bell, summarizing the experience.

"In this way, we have achieved a twofold advantage for our employees: health is protected and satisfaction at work is increased. This fits perfectly with the pronounced employee orientation at se-austria."
